In stand design, lighting is one of the most powerful and most underestimated tools. A well-lit stand attracts attention, guides the visitor and enhances the perceived quality of the products on display. A poorly lit stand, no matter how good the design, loses much of its impact.

The three types of light in a stand

Every well-designed stand uses three types of lighting in combination: general or ambient light, which establishes the overall brightness level of the space; accent or directional light, which focuses attention on specific products or areas; and decorative light, which contributes to the atmosphere and reinforces the brand's visual identity.

The balance between these three types determines whether a stand feels professional and welcoming or flat and unattractive.

Contrast as a tool

The human eye is naturally drawn to contrasts. A product well lit against a darker background immediately becomes the centre of attention. Creating lighting contrasts — between the stand and the hall, between different areas within the stand — is one of the most effective strategies for guiding the visitor's attention without using words.

LED technology: efficiency and flexibility

Current LED systems allow virtually any lighting effect to be achieved with significantly lower energy consumption than traditional systems. RGB LEDs allow colour to be changed according to the product or time of day. Colour temperature (warm or cool light) fundamentally affects how materials, graphics and products are perceived.

Choosing the right colour temperature for your sector makes a difference: warm light (2700-3000K) for fashion and food; cool light (4000-5000K) for technology and industrial products.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistakes in stand lighting are: uniform light without contrasts (which makes the space flat and uninteresting), insufficient lighting (which makes the stand look dark and closed), graphic panels that are not backlit or properly illuminated (which loses much of their visual impact), and lighting that dazzles or hinders comfortable conversation.

Good lighting is the one that is not noticed as such — the one that simply makes everything look better and draws people to the stand naturally.
